This is the most recent typography assignment I have completed. We had to choose a quote, song lyric, or line of poetry of some sort for this project. I chose one of my favorite quotes from Disney's "Cinderella", 'A dream is a wish your heart makes.' The background image does a lot of the work by showing a scene from the movie fading into the background in soft pale blues and purples. Even without the imagery, the text also portrays a lot of the feeling that was happening during this quote. The curly, whimsical design of the letters enunciates the meaning behind the words "dream", "wish" and "heart." The contrast between pale and dark colors draws you in and sets a background to help the bright white of the letters stand out more. I learned a lot about balancing type with imagery and the appropriate contrast between the two. I also gained even more experience and knowledge in typography and expressive type.

In this assignment, I had to choose one emotion to portray by only using letter, no words or images. I chose the emotion "lost". At the top of the page I created an intricate maze, designed entirely of letters and numbers. As you go down the page, the maze begins to fade and the letters become less and less distinct. Eventually, the maze completely disappears and opens up to a blank, empty space. At the bottom of the page is a messy, unorganized pile of random letters and numbers of all different sizes and shapes. Suspended between the maze and the pile is one single letter, floating in an empty space between two masses of confusion. Lost.
This is the 2nd assignment that I did with words, but instead of showing different types of contrast, I was using expressive type. Expressive type is when the physical appearance of the word portrays the meaning of that word. For example, the word "massive" is very large, dark, and utilizes a thick, heavy font to portray the meaning behind the word. The same goes for the other words on the paper. I really enjoyed this assignment, it was really fun and interesting too. I learned a lot about understanding the meanings of words and capturing them in a piece of art. I also learned how to incorporate both letters and pictures into one picture.
This was the first assignment that I used words to show contrast, rather than individual letters. Each example shows two separate styles of contrast. The first example (top) show contrast in space (2D versus 3D) as well as in serif versus sans serif. You'll see that the word "the" has a drop shadow which gives it a 3D appearance and no serifs, whereas "beach" is flat and has very obvious serifs on the ends of each letter. The second example (middle) shows contrast in width as well as in negative versus positive space. The word "the" is significantly thinner than "beach" and you can see the contrast in the black and white letters and background. The third example (bottom) shows contrast both in slant and in scale. "Beach" is slanted slightly to the right, and "the" is straight. "Beach" is also much larger in scale than "the".
The left side of this paper shows contrast in negative versus positive space, and the right side shows contrast in weight (heavy versus light). The contrast between the letters on the right side is very obvious; the one big, heavy letter and the two thin, light letters in front of it. The corresponding colors look really good together too. The left side was more difficult but I love how the final product turned out. The creative variations in size, spaces and placement are really eye-catching.
This assignment was certainly one of my favorites and I absolutely love the overall look. The contrast in this project was shown in space; 2D versus 3D. There are a number of different way to show contrast in space and I like the variations and sizes I used. The colors also go together really well and compliment each other.
This was the first typography assignment I did and I have certainly improved from here. I had to show contrast using scale (size) between 3 letters. This project was fairly easy and fun to complete. I could definetly improve this one by being more creative and using some of the new techniques I have learned since completing this project. Overall, this was a really fun and easy first assignment, and I'm very excited about far I've come since this project.
This assignment was to sow contrast using serif versus sans serif fonts. The contrast is not as prominent as it is in some other projects but the vibrancy of the letters keeps the picture alive and captivating. If I had more time to perfect this assignment I would've made the contrast more noticeable and obvious.
For this typography assignment I had to show contrast between 3 different letters using slant versus non-slant and thin versus thick. The left side is contrast with slant and the right side is contrast with width. This is one of the earlier assignments I did but I think I did pretty well for having limited experience. I really like the way it turned out, the colors and shapes of the letters look really nice together.
